SHINING (NO)

One of the big names of the global metal avant-garde (not to be confused with the eponymous Swedish black metal band), whose origins lie in 1999. Back then, SHINING was founded by the multi-instrumentalist Jørgen Munkeby during his studies on the Norwegian Academy of Music as an instrumental jazz quartet, named after the famous horror film of Stanley Kubrick. The music of this act initially had nothing to do with metal, as apparent from its first two albums “Where Ragged People Go” (2001) and “Sweet Shanghai Devil” (2003) that are purely in jazz territory. The first genre switch came in 2005 with the third album “In the Kingdom of Kitsch You Will Be a Monster”, on which the band presented a combination of experimental jazz, progressive rock and metal. The “Grindstone” album, released two years later, added noise and drone into the mix. In the same year, SHINING embarked on a tour with Enslaved and both bands also cooperated musically, the result of which is a 90-minute-long composition entitled “Nine Nights in Nothingness – Glimpses of Downfall”. The next breakthrough in the music of SHINING comes with the album “Blackjazz”, the tracks of which are instrumentation-wise simpler, more straightforward, yet keeping the unique fusion of metal and jazz elements. The album name also serves to label the overall style of SHINING, which is further developed on albums “One One One” (2013) and “International Blackjazz Society” (2015). If you like metal or jazz, SHINING bring you the best combination of both, so get ready for an energetic and unique music experience!
